Take a Hike!

If you’ve never been to Palmyra, you may not know that we have some of the best trails and nature areas along the Erie Canal. One of our favorite places to walk is the loop that starts at Aqueduct Park on the west end of the village. Park near the beautifully restored change bridge and walk under it along the trail. This path becomes the original towpath near the old, landlocked section of the original canal. Over the years we’ve seen deer, foxes, geese, beavers, raccoons, woodchucks and muskrats. We’ve seen a huge variety of birds (including a juvenile bald eagle and a white swan) and wildflowers on this stretch of the trail as well. Just before you reach Maple Avenue, take a left through the woods and you’ll emerge by the modern canal. You can walk the distance back to your car with a completely different view.

On your left you’ll see this set of steps that take you to a decked overlook of a portion of the wetlands between the two canals. This is the spot Logo Factory has sponsored. Look for our plaque (but note that our address has changed just a bit to 202 East Main).

As you walk along this part of the trail, you have woods on your left and water on your right. It can be hard to believe that you are so close to one of our county’s busiest routes when you experience the peaceful sounds of nature here. Once you reach the park, you can take a short walk over the bridge to get to the lock. Visit the park in the summer months and chances are you’ll get to see the lock in action! Watching a boat travel through a canal lock is fascinating, and something everyone should see.

Take a hike or two this year along this trail and you’ll be sure to feel refreshed and relaxed. We may see you out there!
